Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Original Description

Diagnosis. Coccoliths with a loxolith-rim and a complete floor of small equal-sized granules.

Extra details from original publication
Included genera. Alfordia gen. nov. (hollow spine, including species formerly referred to Rhabdolithina Reinhardt) ; Rhagodiscus Reinhardt (no spine); Viminites gen. nov. (solid spine).

Remarks. The coccoliths included in the three genera Alfordia gen. nov., Rhagodiscus Reinhardt, 1967, and Viminites gen. nov. differ from other loxolith-bearing coccoliths in having the area enclosed by the loxolith-ring completely filled on the proximal side by a floor of minute granules. In most species these granules form a random mosaic, but in a few they are arranged in a hexa gonal or other geometrical pattern. There are no bridging structures, and when a spine is present, there are no supporting buttresses.

In the Eiffellithaceae the floor is built of relatively large plates, and is often incomplete.

In the Zygolithaceae, there is usually no floor, and the central opening is characteristically spanned by bridging structures of various kinds; in the few examples where a floor is present, it is perforated and always accompanied by a bridging structure.

This is a typically Cretaceous family, abundantly represented at many levels, particularly in the Aptian and Albian.
