Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Editors' Notes According to the description of Lecal (1967), the single coccolith on which this species was based was 3.5 µm long and had 23 laths. The large size would suggest A. maxima, but the coccoliths of that species (or variant of A. quattrospina?) have far more laths (40-56 according to the original description). Since the number of laths is anomalously low for a coccolith of Acanthoica this size, it is quite possible that the magnification of the TEM was incorrectly calibrated. [my interpretation - JRY 2020]
