Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Original Description Cells subspherical, ca. 5µm, (3.9-6.7) in diameter when dry, with two flagella 8-13µm long and a coiling hapto-nema of approximately the same length. The protoplast is covered by scales of two types. Inner scales plate-like, oval, 0.9-1.5 x 0.7-1.2µm. In addition to a distinct inframarginal ridge, ca. 0.1µm inside the edge of the scale, the distal plate-scale surface only shows a faint concentric striation. The proximal surface has a distinct patterning of radial ridges (80-128 per scale) arranged in four sectors round an oblong central thickening. The scale rim is slightly thickened. Outer scales cylindrical with oval base-plates (1.0-1.6 X 0.6-1.2µm). The patterning of the base-plate is similar to that of the plate-scale, with 86-144 radial ridges on the proximal side, and a faint concentric striation on the distal side. An upright concentrically striated cylinder, 0.4-0.8µm high, is attached to the margin of the base-plate. Size: Cells subspherical, ca. 5µm; Inner scales plate-like, oval, 0.9-1.5 x 0.7-1.2µm. Outer scales cylindrical with oval base-plates (1.0-1.6 X 0.6-1.2µm) Etymology: Greek: with short cylinders.
