Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Original Description Cells usually saddle shaped approximately 14 µm long - 16 µm wide with two pale golden brown chloroplasts arranged laterally in relation to the curved flanges of the saddle, pyrenoids not projecting. Appendages arising close together from the concave surface near one end; two equal flagella c. 25 µm in length; the haptonema containing 6 microtubules internally, c.160 µm long when extended, coiled into a helix of 25--35 gyres c. 1-1.5 µm in diameter when retracted. Cells covered in mucilage and with two layers of superficial scales, the outer scales cup shaped, the under scales flat. The cup scales more massive than in C. strobilus and larger each scale 0.2 µm wide x 0.25 µm deep, the outer surface of the bowl with four superposed rows of small rectangular perforations near the forward margin. Plate scales oval with a thickened margin and a sparse pattern of ridges radiating from a cruciform plane centre, an additional hand of dense material passing across the striations about midway between the centre and the margin; dimensions of the plate scales: 0.2 µm x 0.3 µm. Swimming movements rapid with pronounced gyration. Other features as in C. strobilus
