Original Description

Cell conical, 4 µm long, 3 µm wide; flagella 2 equal, 35 µm long and a haptonema, 15 µm long when extended. Scales all plate-like and of three sizes. The largest 2.6 µm long X 1.8 µm wide, with an apparently thickened margin and a pattern of radiating ridges on the proximal surface and irregular striations on the surface. Middle-size plates 1.8 µm long X 1.2 µm wide similar to the large plates in patterning but thicker in texture and probably with a narrow rim flexed towards the distal surface. Smallest scales sub circular, diameter 0.4 µm and with a conspicuous rim flexed towards distal surface; a faint pattern of radiating ridges and sometimes a central thickening visible from the proximal side.

Cellula conica, 4 µm longa, 3 µm lata; flagella 2 aequalia, 35 µm longa; haptonema extensum 15 µm longum. Omnes squamae laminares, aliae magnae, aliae mediae magnitudinis, aliae parvae. Squama magna 2.6 µm longa, 1.B µm lata, margine ut videtur incrassata, in facie introrsa carinis radiantibus, in extrorsa striis irregularibus ornata. Squama mediae magnitudinis 1.8 µm longa, 1.2 µm lata, illius ornamento similis, crassior, cingulo augusto extrorso ut videtur marginata. Squama parva suborbicularis, 0.4 µm diam., cingulo manifesto extrorso squamae appresso, carin is radiantibus extlibus et interdum parte centrali incrassata e facie interiore visibili ornata.

Etymology:
The specific epithet herdlensis has been chosen because much of the preparative work was carried out on the island of Herdla, Norway

C. herdlensis was frequently found in plankton samples from Hjeltefjorden and Herdldjorden (see LEADBEATER 1972).

The conical cell, approximately 4 µm long and 3 µm wide, bears two equal flagella and a haptonema about half the length of the flagella (Fig.4l). Plate scales of three types cover the cell. It is not possible from shadowcast whole mounts alone to understand the relative arrangement of the different types. The small plate scales (Fig. 42) bear a pattern of fine radiating ridges on their proximal surfaces. No pattern can be discerned on the distal surface but there is an obvious inflexed rim and sometimes a suggestion of a central thickening (Fig. 44). The medium-size plate scales are rimless and bear a pattern of radiating ridges on their proximal surfaces, but are almost patternless on their distal surfaces (Fig. 44).

The large plate scales are very similar to the medium-size plate scales except that the peripheral ridge on the distal surface is more distinct (Figs. 43, 44). The texture is probably thinner and there is a slightly more distinct pattern of felted lines on the distal surface.
