Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Original Description

Chloroplast containing cells, 1.5-4.0 um in diameter when dried, possibly up to twice as large when living, with two slightly subequal flagella, ca. 11 um and 13 um long Haptonema longer than flagella and in 8 to 18 coils in dried specimens. Body scales of two types, both of which are 0.2-0.4 um in diameter, with a cruciform central pattern surrounded by a 0.03 um diameter central ring One scale type circular with an additional raised ring near the periphery and a radial pattern of 25-30 lines on one face and a similar pattern without the raised ring on the other. The other scale type with a slightly raised angular rim, probably cup shaped, with little or no pattern other than the circuform center and central ring.

Etymology:
Named in honor B.S.C. Leadbeater for his work in protistology.

Extra details from original publication
Distribution: Pelagic waters of the Southern North Atlantic Ocean, the South Florida coast, Eastern Australia and the Coast of Norway.

Remarks: The haptonema and flagella of this organism are easily lost and as a result, only 3 of the 27 representatives of this species in the present study were complete, most others appearing as cell bodies surrounded by a field of scales. Incomplete specimens of this species have been observed before and scale micrographs have been published under the name Chrysochromulina sp. # 1 by LEADBEATER (1972a) and HALLEGRAEFF (1983). The type specimen is pictured in Fig. 6.

The first of two scale types possesses a typical radial pattern and a central ring on both faces. One face ('A in Fig. 7) differs from the other in possession of an additional raised ring near the scale margin ('B' in Fig. 7) and in the reduced clarity of its radial pattern. The second scale type ('C' in Fig. 7) has the cruciform center and central ring but without the radial pattern and has a somewhat angular, thickened margin. The scale most similar to this occurs in C. campanulifera, but differs from that of the present species in several details of size and pattern.
As suggested by LEADBEATER (1972a) the second scale type in the present species is probably cup shaped, however, this suggestion can only be confirmed using sectioned material. Present at sta. 4/1 & 65 m, 6/100 m, 7/35 & 100 m, 8/1,35,65 & 100 m, 9/65 m and 10/65 m.
