Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Original Description

Protoplast globose, ca. 8 µm diam. containing two plastids; flagellar length uncertain but not less than 20 µm with a haptonema shorter but able to coil. Scales dimorphic: cylinders on the outer scales up to 16 µm long x 0.5-0.7 µm wide, breaking readily transversely, thin-walled, slightly widened basally and each attached inframarginally to a flat, rimmed, base-plate; plate-scales of the underlayer very numerous, circular in outline, ca. 0.6-1.0 µm diam. but with a few smaller ovals, all rimmed, with an additional infra-marginal ridge conspicuously raised on the distal face and visible through the scale on the proximal face. Patterning on plate-scales and the base-plates of cylinders otherwise similar, consisting of radial ridges arranged in quadrants round a cruciform central thickening, visible from both surfaces but the distal surface of the rim apparently patternless.

Size:
Cell ca. 8 µm; outer cylinder scales up to 16 µm long x 0.5-0.7 µm wide; underlayer scales circular ca. 0.6-1.0 µm.

Etymology:
Latin with fat cylinders
