Original descriptions of taxa - also emended descriptions for a few taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Compiled data
Cellula ambitu ovoidea 8-13 um longa, 6-9 jum lata humerum protrusum habens in apice. Chloroplasti bini aureo-brunei. Flagella item bina aqualia vel subaequalia, 20-27 µm longa, e sulco apicali infra humerun orientia, inter quae haptonema eminet flexibile porrectum, non spirale, 7-15 µm longum, Corpus cellulae squamis vestitun Cells 8-13 µm long, 6-9 µm wide, outline ovoid with pro- nounced apical protuberance and two golden-brown chloro- plasts, bearing two equal to subequal flagella 20-27 um long and a flexible noncoiling haptonema 7-15 µm long. Appendages inserted subapically in shallow groove. Cells covered with scales. Forma palpebralis Corpus cellulare squamis triformibus opertum: squama spinea (0.58-0.82 × 0.54-0.79 µm) proiectura ramosa centrali margineque erecto peripherali cum 19-24 proiecturis instructa (0.13- 0.23 µm). Squamae planae ovoideae maiores (0.78-0.93 X 0.58-- 0.76 µm) costis radiatis in ambabus squamae superficiebus (87- 93) margineque peripherali plano (0.07-0.12 µm) et squamae planae minores rotundatae (0.44-0.69 × 0.36-0.65 µm) costis radiatis in ambabus squamae superficiebus (48) margineque peripherali plano (0.039-0.056 um) instructae. Cell body covered with three types of scales, a spine scale (0.58- 0.82 X 0.54-0.79 µm) with a central spiny projection and peripheral upright rim with 19-24 projections (0.13-0.23 µm). Large plate scales ovoid (0.78-0.93 × 0.58-0.76 µm) with radiating ribs (87-93) on both scale faces and peripheral flat rim (0.07-0.12 µm). Small plate scales rounded (0.44-0.69 X 0.36 0.65 µm), both faces with radiating ribs (48) and peripheral flat rim on one scale face (0.039-0.056 µm). Forma bisquamata Corpus cellulare squamis biformibus opertum. Squamae planae ovales maiores (1.04-1.25 µm x 0.80-1.03 µm) margine erecto peripherali (0.063-0.23 um). Superficies squamae ambae costis radiatis in quadras dispositis (147-152) instructae. Squamae ovales planae minores (0.58-0.75 X 0.39-0.57 µm) cruciformi centrali et margine peripherali plano (0.051-0.093 µm). Superficies squamae ambae costis radiatis instructae (93-96). Cell body covered with two types of scales. Large oval plate scales (1.04-1.25 X 0.80-1.03 µm) with peripheral upright rin (0.063 0.23 um). Both scale faces with radiating ribs (147-152) arranged in quadrants. Small oval plate scales (0.58-0.75 x 0.39-0.57 µm) with central cruciate structure and peripheral flat rim (0.051-0.093 µm). Both scale faces with radiating ribs (93-96). TYPE CULTURE: Strain UIO133 maintained at University of Basque country, Spain, and the University of Oslo Culture Collection, Norway. The two life cycle phases were given Linnean names - Chrysochromulina palpebralis forma palpebralis and C. palpebralis forma bisquamata,. This is contrary to the principles of nomenclatural taxnomy so, as with other life-cycle phases they should be distinquished informally.
