Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Original Description Cellulae dorsiventrales, breviter doliiformes, ad finem posteriorem vix angustatae, 3.6-4.8 Х 4.8-6 Х 2.3 µ. Flagella duo, cellula duplo vel plus longiora. Haptonema anterius, ad 70 µ longum. Chromatophori duo, parietales, cupuliformes, indivisi, luteo-brunnei. Nucleus magnus, sphaericus, saepius anterior. (Fig. 2).
Translation Dorsiventral cells, shortly doliiform, narrowed to the posterior end, 3.6-4.8 X 4.8-6 X 2.3 µ. Two flagella, twice or more as long as the cell. Haptonema anterior, to 70 µ long. Chromatophores two, parietal, cup-shaped, undivided, yellow-brown. Nucleus large, spherical, often anterior. (Fig. 2). Extra details from original publication Our species is similar to Ch. aliferae Parke et Manton, but differs well in size, shape and metabolism, and in having two undivided chromatophores. Ch. kappa Parke and Manton, which is similar in cell dimensions, is well distinguished by its much longer haptonemata, flagella and two undivided chromatophores.
