Original Description Lancet-shaped cells, about 15–18 x 6–8 µm, later- ally compressed, with two lateral slightly asymmetrical arms. Cell posterior acute to rounded. Two subequal flagella, 19–26 µm and 17–24 µm long, respectively. A coiling haptonema, about 35 µm in length. Three types of plate scales. The external large, elongate scales, rectangular to polygonal, measure 3 µm in length and 1 µm in width. They carry a pronounced upright rim and a fine ornamentation of radiating ridges follows a sigmoid central line delineating four unequal quadrants. About 100 radiating ridges per quadrant are present. Underneath is a layer of oval plate scales, 1–1.5 µm in length and 0.5–0.7 µm in width, more regular in outline. They also carry a flat rim, and the radiating ridges are arranged in four quadrants, the central suture being slightly sigmoid. About 40 radiating ridges are present in each quadrant. A third layer is composed of smaller slightly oval plate scales, less numerous, measuring 0.8 x 0.6 µm, with a pattern of symmetrical radiating ridges.
Compared with C. lanceolata, C. pseudolanceolata cells have a similar outline but slightly more rounded ends when observed under the light microscope (Fig. 2, g–j). Two unequal arms are present at the anterior end of the cell (Fig. 2, g–j). The posterior part rounds up after a while (Fig. 2h). The two subequal flagella and the haptonema emerge from a pronounced depression between the two arms. The way of swimming is similar to C. lanceolata, which makes differentiation between the two species more difficult when observed with the light microscope under living conditions. Confusion is impossible when cells are seen with the electron microscope as the scales are completely different (Figs. 3a and 4b). The three scale types are illustrated in Figure 4, with TEM and SEM preparations. Extra details from original publication This species was first seen in an Oxytoxum (Dinophyta) culture obtained from a July 1992 sample in Banyuls-sur-Mer. Since 1994, it has been seen almost every year between June and September in the SOLA site. As mentioned above, it has been also found in Mallorca, but it seems to be restricted to the Mediterranean Sea as there is no record at the moment for the Atlantic coast
