Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Scales of the inner and outer scale layers are identical, except for the upright rim of the scales comprising the outer layer (Figs 3, 4). The rim measures approximately V3 of the scale diameter. The centre of each scale has a central ring with a cross. Ap proximately 25 ribs radiate from the central ring to the periphery. The concentric-like pattern is composed of, typically, two spiralling ribs. Scales with only one spiralling rib can also be found (Fig. 3). The two scale faces are identical.
The cells contain two parietal chloroplasts, each with an immersed pyrenoid. Single tubules penetrate the pyrenoids (Figs 5, 6). In the space between the chloroplast membranes and the chloroplast endoplasmic reticulum, vesicle-like inclu sions are observed (Fig. 6). The nucleus is located in the pos terior part of the cell. The mitochondrion is probably single and reticulated. The cell has a dictyosome (Fig. 5), known in the Prymnesiophyceae to produce scales. The area just un derneath the cell membrane contains a number of vesicles (Figs 5, 7). Membrane-bound inclusions can also be observed in the cytoplasm and sometimes in vesicles just beneath the cell membrane (arrows in Fig. 7). The cells sometimes contain food vacuoles (not illustrated).
The flagellar apparatus has not been studied in detail. It appears to be simple, lacking a compound root. The basal bodies are almost perpendicular to each other and the extend ed part of the haptonema has six microtubules (Figs 8, 9).
