Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Original Description
[google translation, 2024]
Diagnosis: Nannofossils in the form of elongated, truncated cones or baskets with a round to elliptical cross-section, which consist of an outer layer of vertically adjacent, non-overlapping, thin slats and an inner body that usually completely fills the central space. This inner body is formed from one or more cycles of long, thin slats, which are arranged vertically or spindle-shaped and rotated radially to the longitudinal axis. The radial position of these inner elements can be modified such as: E.g. in E. zlambachensis and E. jansae, where the slats are divided into sectors: Each radial slat is followed by several more slats in parallel, naturally becoming shorter towards the outside. They are arranged clockwise. The axial canal is thin, often not visible or absent at the distal end. There are no special proximal plates, bars or crosses.
