Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Original Description Diagnosis. Coccoliths with a broad marginal zone on the proximal surface consisting of elongate crystals arranged in numerous concentric rings. Extra details from original publication Remarks. Percivalia was originally included in the subfamily Zygodiscoideae of the Syracosphaeraceae by Bukry (1969, p. 20). It is difficult, however, to find any real family resemblance between the mid-Cretaceous species of Percivalia and either Zygodiscus or Syracosphaera. A marginal wall constructed like a loxolith-ring, though seen in some species of Percivalia, is not invariably present, and the peculiar structure ofthe proximal face alienates this genus from the Zygolithaceae. The structure of Percivalia is so different from that of any family hitherto described that the genus is probably best treated as the sole representative of a new family.
