During my investigations in the Adriatic, I was also able to identify a second type of resting spore, which differs significantly from the form described above and is suitable for expanding our understanding of the resting states of chrysomonas beyond the scope of the Coccolithinae. It is a species of the genus Rhabdosphaera (Rh. erinaceus nov. spec.). At first glance, the individuals exhibit a certain habitual resemblance to Schiller's (1926, p. 399, Fig. G) drawing of Rhabdosphaera nigra. I have already observed the vegetative stage of Rh. erinaceus in several cases, but it still requires closer examination. The spores, quite numerous in some samples (Plate I, Fig. 6), have a spherical or somewhat ellipsoidal shell and a diameter of 25 to 42 mm. The skeletal elements (Fig. 2) are closely packed together in a pavement-like fashion, so that they flatten each other into polygonal prisms. These are 0.9 to 2 mm high and 2 to 4.8 µm wide horizontally. The rods perpendicular to them are 2 to 5 mm long and 0.5 to 1 µm thick, appearing slightly broadened at the outermost end. The shells thus show considerable variability, both in overall dimensions and in the size of the calcareous elements; but by no means do the larger shells always have thicker calcareous elements, and vice versa. Only the future study of ample material will teach whether different varieties can be distinguished or not.
