Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Original Description

Description:
Chromatophoren 2, sehr blassgelb.

Translated Description:
Shell regularly spherical, 20-25 µm in diameter, delicate and transparent, without noticeable pores (at the applied magnification 1800x). The shell is set with widely spaced rhabdoliths, the basal disks of which are 4-5 µm wide and from which a 38-40 µm long, in the middle slightly thicker, pointed extension rises, the piercing of which is not certain. Flagellum not seen. Chromatophores 2, very pale yellow.

Remarks:

Remarks:
With this form I have tried in vain to identify a canal running through the appendages, and I consider it more than likely that the rhabdospheres with thin appendages lack the perforation.
In addition to carbonate of lime, an acid-fast substance is likely to be embedded in the lime body, since I found the projections and, in a certain sense, the shell to be dimensionally stable when exposed to very dilute hydrochloric or sulfuric acid. Furthermore, Rh. longistylis is one of the few coccolithophores that is restricted to low-salt water.

Editors' Notes
It is not clear which species was described here and it is quite possible that it was not a coccolithoohre. The drawing of the coccosphere resembles Rhabdosphara xiphos and Palusphaera vandeli and the name R. longistylis has been applied to these coccolithopohres in the literature. However, both these species are much smaller than Schiller describes - with the central coccosphere ca 10 µm across  vs 20-25 µm and the spines  5-10 µm long vs 38-40 µm.  Meringosphaera mediterranea is nearer in size but has undulating spines.
