Citation: Acanthoica backmanii Dunkley Jones et al., 2009
Taxonomic rank: species
Taxonomic discussion: Body-coccolith morphology is very similar to extant Acanthoica species (e.g., A. quattrospina - A. acanthifera) (Young et al. 2003). May be a junior synonym of Acanthoica cohenii (Jerkovic1971) - as suggested by Galovic & Young (2012), there is a significant difference in age between these species but the morphologies are very similar.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Acanthoica): Body coccoliths with well-developed radial lath cycle, low mound in centre; coccospheres polymorphic, usually some coccoliths with well-developed spines
This taxon: Small (2-3µm), broadly elliptical body coccoliths with well-developed rim, radial-lath and lamellar cycles. Lamellar cycle forms very low domed protrusion or elongate spine.
