Acanthoica quattrospina

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Syracosphaerales -> Rhabdosphaeraceae -> Acanthoica -> Acanthoica quattrospina
Sister taxa: A. quattrospina, A. acanthifera, A. acanthos, A. biscayensis, A. janchenii, A. maxima, A. sp A ⟩⟨ A. backmanii, A. cohenii, A. laffittei, A. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Acanthoica quattrospina Lohmann, 1903
taxonomic rank: Species
Synonyms:
Variants:
The following species were accepted by Kleijne (1992) in her review of the Rhabdosphaeraceae, but are very rarely recorded and difficult to separate from A. quattrospina. It is possible that some of them are merely variants of A. quattrospina.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Acanthoica): Body coccoliths with well-developed radial lath cycle, low mound in centre; coccospheres polymorphic, usually some coccoliths with well-developed spines
This taxon: Body coccoliths sub-circular, (1.5-2.5 µm), with slits between radial cycle elements, lamellar cycle makes low cone. Long spines on polar coccoliths (one or both ends).

Ecology & Biogeography

A very widespread species, although rarely abundant. It is often present in low diversity assemblages such as those of shelf seas.

Biology & life-cycles
HOL = Acanthoica quattrospina HOL, a form with affinities to Sphaerocalyptra, but which was never separately described (Cros et al. 2000). Very good combination coccosphere examples were illustrated by Supraha (2014)
