Algirosphaera meteora

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Syracosphaerales -> Rhabdosphaeraceae -> Algirosphaera -> Algirosphaera meteora
Sister taxa: A. cucullata, A. fabaceus, A. meteora, A. robusta, A. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Algirosphaera meteora (Müller 1972) Norris, 1984
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Anthosphaera meteora Müller 1972

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Algirosphaera): Body coccoliths with well-developed radial lath cycle; domal or double-lipped protrusion; coccosphere dimorphic, CFCs larger and taller
This taxon: Coccoliths have a rounded protrusion with tile cover, but no internal rods

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: A. meteora *

Morphology:

Coccosphere: monomorphic. Coccolith height seems to vary on the few observed coccospheres, but with no obvious grouping of the more elevated coccoliths.
Coccoliths: broadly elliptical, with constriction around base of the spine; proximal surface lacks central irregular cycle. The protrusion is hollow rather than filled by calcitic rods as in A. robusta.

Phylogenetic relations

In the Eocene Algirosphaera is used for coccoilths with protrusions formed from a mass of calcitic rods, but differentiation from Blackites needs more work (i.e. A. meteora might be better regarded as a Blackites species)

Geological Range:
Notes: A. meteora was described from Quaternary sediments, but rarely observed since
Last occurrence (top): Extant. Data source: present in the plankton (Young et al. 2003)
First occurrence (base): within Quaternary Period (0.00-2.59Ma, base in Gelasian stage). Data source: [JRY rough estimate]
