Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Coccolith families inc sed -> Coccolith genera inc sed -> Aliculosphaera
Sister taxa: Aliculosphaera, Biantholithus, Camuralithus, Centumgemina, Craterolithus, Ellipsolithus, Gladiolithus, Ilselithina, Leesella, Luminocanthus, Pedinocyclus, Petasus

Daughter taxa (time control age-window is: 0-800Ma)
Aliculosphaera subantarctica
large species with prominent wing

Taxonomy:

Citation: Aliculosphaera Aubry & Bord 2009
taxonomic rank: Genus
Type species: Helicosphaera? subantarctica Edwards and Perch-Nielsen 1975
Taxonomic discussion: The one known species does not conform to any well-establsihed genus so use of a separate genus for it as propsed by Aubry & Bord (2009) is justified.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Coccolith genera inc sed): Heterococcolith genera which cannot be assigned to any family
This taxon: Placolith with strongly distal shield, showing high birefringence

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Aliculosphaera *

Morphology:

The one speices assigned to this genus was originally placed in Helicopontosphaera (a synonym of Helicosphaera) but it does not show the asymmetric flange of Helicosphaera and the distal shield is formed of R-units not V-units, as indicated by the high birefrinfegence seen in the type images.
