Amaurolithus tricorniculatus

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Nannolith families inc sed -> Ceratolithaceae -> Amaurolithus -> Amaurolithus tricorniculatus
Sister taxa: A. brevigracilis, A. delicatus, A. primus, A. tricorniculatus, A. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Amaurolithus tricorniculatus (Gartner, 1967) Gartner&Bukry, 1975
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Ceratolithus tricorniculatus Gartner, 1967
Variants:

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Amaurolithus): Ceratoliths non-birefringent or only weakly birefringent
This taxon: Right arm extended into apical spur.

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: C. tricorniculatus + * , C. bizzarus *

Morphology:

As noted by Gartner & Bukry (1975) A. tricorniculatus often shows more birefringence than other species of Amaurolithus, since it rarely rests flat on the microscpe slide.

Geological Range:
Last occurrence (top): at top of NN14 zone (100% up, 3.9Ma, in Zanclean stage). Data source: zonal marker, with A. delicatus, (see e.g. Young 1998)
First occurrence (base): within NN11b subzone (6.91-7.42Ma, base in Tortonian stage). Data source: Young 1998 - - Raffi et al. (1998) report FAD later, in NN12.
