Blackites globosus

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Syracosphaerales -> Rhabdosphaeraceae -> Blackites -> B. inflatus group -> Blackites globosus
Sister taxa: B. aktulagayensis, B. bullatus, B. creber, B. culter, B. flammeus, B. fustis, B. gladius, B. globosus, B. herculesii, B. inflatus, B. kilwaensis, B. ornatus, B. piriformis, B. praeinflatus, B. pseudomorionum, B. rotundus, B. rugosus, B. sextonii, B. turritus, B. virgatus

Taxonomy:

Citation: Blackites globosus Bown, 2005
Taxonomic rank: species
Taxonomic discussion: Similar to Blackites bullatus but with a spine that is near spherical.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (B. inflatus group): Spine inflated with maximum width above base, many with conspicous bulge
This taxon: Rhabdolith with hollow spine that rapidly expands into a sphere (maximum width almost twice that of the coccolith base). The spine has a short narrow collar, a pinched distal termination, and shows a distinctive cross-hatched pattern in its upper part. The rim is relatively broad and the outer cycle does not lie distally over the inner cycle.
