Candeodiscoaster

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Discoasterales -> Discoasteraceae -> Candeodiscoaster
Sister taxa: Discoaster, Catinaster, Candeodiscoaster

Daughter taxa (time control age-window is: 0-800Ma)
Candeodiscoaster protomultiradiatus
Like D. multiradiatus but with birefringent central cycle

Taxonomy:

Citation: Candeodiscoaster Howe 2022
taxonomic rank: Genus

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Discoasteraceae): Discoidal discoasteralids formed of one, non-birefringent in plan view, cycle.
This taxon: Ancestral discoasterids, with a birefingent central cycle (Paleocene)

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Candeodiscoaster

Morphology:

Circular nannoliths with a broad, low main cycle of elongate radial elements joined through most of their length, and in which the calcite c-axes are arranged such that in plan view, the cycle is not birefringent in cross-polarised light. In the central area, one or two cycles are present, which in lateral view are flush with, or lower than, the top of the main cycle. In plan view, these cycles are birefringent in cross-polarised light. [Howe 2022]
