Taxonomy:
Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Catinaster): Discoasterids with bifurcate ray tips that meet to form a basket like structure (Miocene)
This taxon: Rays bifurcate to form distal rim of basket, but do not extend significantly beyond it
Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: C. coalitus * , C. rotundus *
Catinaster with rays which bifurcate to form a distal rim, but which do not extend significantly beyond this rim. The rim continues to the proximal pole producing a basket-like body. N.B. short pseudo-rays are often formed where the tips of bifurcations meet.
Morphology:
LITHS: nannolith-radiate, star-shaped, polygonal, CROSS-POLARS: V-prominent, 1ou, |
Lith size: 4->9µm; Segments: 6->6; Data source notes: size from OD and illustrated specimens |
Geological Range:
Notes: This is the first Catinaster species to appear and is the most common. Its base is used as zonal marker for NN8 and in most other Neogene nanofossil zonaions. The last occurrence is more gradational and has not been used as a marker event. It should also be noted that is a very robust nannofossil and can easily be reworked.
Last occurrence (top): within NN10 zone (8.29-9.53Ma, top in Tortonian stage). Data source: Young 1998
First occurrence (base): at base of NN8 zone (0% up, 10.9Ma, in Tortonian stage). Data source: zonal marker (see e.g. Young 1998)
