Discoaster consutus

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Discoasterales -> Discoasteraceae -> Discoaster -> D. quinqueramus group -> Discoaster consutus
Sister taxa: D. quinqueramus, D. berggrenii, D. consutus, D. bergenii

Sub-taxa & variants (time control age-window is: 0-800Ma)
Discoaster explicatus
stem-ridges extend beyond central area - long rays

Taxonomy:

Citation: Discoaster consutus de Kaenel & Bergen, in de Kaenel et al. 2017
Taxonomic rank: species
Synonyms:
Taxonomic discussion: de Kaenel & Bergen in de Kaenel et al. (2017) proposed D. consutus as a new name for Discoaster berggrenii ssp. extensus Wei 2003 in order to use it at species level (the name Discoaster extensus Hay 1967 would have been a senior homonym if extensus was used at species level).

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (D. quinqueramus group): Symmetric typically 5-rayed, late Miocene discoasters; rays curved proximally, without bifurcations; well-developed distal star and usually proximal boss
This taxon: prominent central structures and short free rays, stem-ridges extend beyond central area
