Helicosphaera HOL ponticuliferus type

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Holococcoliths -> flat-topped -> Helicosphaera HOL -> Helicosphaera HOL ponticuliferus type
Sister taxa: H. HOL catilliferus type, H. HOL confusus type, H. HOL ponticuliferus type, H. pavimentum HOL

Taxonomy:

Citation: Helicosphaera HOL ponticuliferus type informal
taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Corisphaera ponticulifera Kamptner 1941
Synonyms:
Taxonomic discussion: Nomenclature here follows Young & Bown (2014)

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Helicosphaera HOL): Monomorphic; liths solid - formed of layers of crystallites in rhomboid array
Coccolith distal surface with central boss and varying number of depressions.

This taxon: Liths with two depressions, extending to proximal surface and separated by a bridge surmounted by a boss.

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: C. ponticulifera *

Morphology:

The crystalites are in rhombohedral array but it is much less uniform than in Helicosphaera HOL catilliferus type with the rhombohedra tending to be aligned with their longer axis parallel to the edge of coccolith. In LM this results in discrete blocks being present at the ends of the coccolith.

Size:
disk 6-9 crystallites high
