Taxonomy:

Citation: Markalius Bramlette&Martini, 1964
Type species: Markalius inversus (Deflandre in Deflandre and Fert, 1954) Bramlette and Martini, 1964
Taxonomic discussion: As Varol (2023) has shown, both shields of Markalius are formed of V-units. This separates it from all other placoliths and justfies placing it as a genus incertae sedis.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Mesozoic Survivors): Mesozoic taxa which occur in low abundances in the early Palaeogene.
This taxon: Circular placoliths with moderately birefringent shields, bright inner tube cycle and narrow or closed central areas.

Size:
All described species are of similar size - coccoliths 5-10 µm across.
