Michaelsarsia sp. Specimens which cannot be assigned to established species |
Taxonomy:
Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Syracosphaeraceae): BCs muroliths or placoliths with radial laths and axial structure, ofen with higlhy modified exothecal coccoliths
This taxon: Coccosphere with apical appendages formed from string of three highly-modified coccoliths, supported by whorl coccoliths
Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Michaelsarsia * , Halopappus
Morphology:
As in Calciopappus the arms can be found either radially extended or swept-back parallel to the main coccosphere, it is thought they form in the swept-back position and can be released into the radially extended position, possibly as a defence mechansim, Young et al. (2009).
