Palusphaera

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Syracosphaerales -> Rhabdosphaeraceae -> Palusphaera
Sister taxa: Acanthoica, Algirosphaera, Blackites, Cyrtosphaera, Discosphaera, Palusphaera, Rhabdosphaera, Solisphaera

Daughter taxa (time control age-window is: 0-800Ma)
Palusphaera vandelii
Long (>10 µm) delicate tapering spines without collar. Basal disk circular (ca 2µm), with broad rim on distal side.
Palusphaera probertii
Like P. vandelii but basal disks smaller (ca 1.5 µm long), elliptical, and with narrow rim.
Palusphaera crosiae
Form with robust spines and maximum spine thickness approximately 1/3 up spine.
Palusphaera bownii
Spines, trumpet-like, low, open and flaring distally
Palusphaera sp.
Specimens which cannot be assigned to established species

Taxonomy:

Citation: Palusphaera Lecal, 1965
Taxonomic rank: genus
Type species: Palusphaera vandeli Lecal, 1965
Taxonomic discussion: The genus Palusphaera was reveiwed by Archontikis & Young (2021) who described three new species. They also showed that whilst Palusphaera and Rhabdosphaera were primarily spearated on the grounds of Rhabdosphaera being dimorphic and Palusphaera monomorphic (all body coccoilths have spines) the included species also consistently differ in the curvature of rows of elements in the lamellar cycle   - see table below.

Genus coccolith types on coccosphere curvature of rows of lamellar elements
Palusphaera
(4 extant species)
monomorphic
(all coccoliths have spines)
Dextrogyre in distal view
Laevogyre in proximal view
Rhabdosphaera
(2 extant species)
dimorphic
(some coccoliths lack spines)
Laevogyre in distal view
Dextrogyre in proximal view

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Rhabdosphaeraceae): BCs planoliths with radial lath cycle and highly-variable axial structures. Often polymorphic and/or varimorphic
This taxon: Coccoliths without radial lath cycle; coccospheres monomorphic, all spine-bearing
