Palusphaera probertii

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Syracosphaerales -> Rhabdosphaeraceae -> Palusphaera -> Palusphaera probertii
Sister taxa: P. vandelii, P. probertii, P. crosiae, P. bownii, P. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Palusphaera probertii Archontikis & Young 2021
Taxonomic rank: species

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Palusphaera): Coccoliths without radial lath cycle; coccospheres monomorphic, all spine-bearing
This taxon: Like P. vandelii but basal disks smaller (ca 1.5 µm long), elliptical, and with narrow rim.

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: P. probertii *

Morphology:

THis form is similar to P. vandelii, and was not separated from it until the review of Archontikis & Young (2021). It is also similar to Rhabdosphaera xiphos and all three form small cosspheres with numerous long thin radiating spines There are, however, consistent  differences between he three species, as summarised in the table

coccosphere basal disk shape disk length base of spine curvature of lamellar element rows
Palusphaera probertii monomorphic elliptical 1.2-1.8 µm not differentiated from the rest of the spine Dextrogyre in distal view
Laevogyre in proximal view
Palusphaera vandelii monomorphic circular 1.6-2.2 µm fatter than the rest of spine and with irregular spiral structure Dextrogryre in distal view
Laevogyre in proximal view
Rhabdosphaera xiphos dimorphic elliptical   1-2 µm with flared collar Laevogryre in distal view
Detrogyre in proximal view

Size:
Coccosphere diameter c. 7–8 μm excluding processes and c. 13–18 μm with processes. BCs c. 1.5 μm × c. 1.1 μm; rim c. 0.2 μm in length and width. Spine is typically c. 5–8 μm long.
