Papposphaera arctica

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Coccolith families inc sed -> Papposphaeraceae -> Papposphaera -> Papposphaera arctica
Sister taxa: P. lepida, P. obpyramidalis, P. vexillata ⟩⟨ P. sp. type 1, P. sp. type 4, P. sp. type 5, P. sp. type 6, P. sp. type 2 ⟩⟨ P. sagittifera, P. sarion, P. arctica, P. iugifera, P. heldalii ⟩⟨ P. thomsenii, P. bourrellii, P. sp. type 3, P. sp. cf. type 3, P. sp. type 3 ⟩⟨ P. simplicissima ⟩⟨ P. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Papposphaera arctica (Manton et al. 1976) Thomsen et al., 1991
taxonomic rank: Species
Basionym: Turrisphaera arctica Manton et al. 1976
Taxonomic discussion: Thomsen et al (1991) suggested that Papposphaera sarion Thomsen 1981 was the heterococcolith stage of Turrisphaera arctica Manton Sutherland & Oates 1976. However, Thomsen et al. (2016) have shown that the two species are involved, and so that P. arctica and P. sarion are closely related but discrete species.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Papposphaera): Coccolith distal rim serrated - elements pentagonal;
Coccosphere varimorphic, or dimorphic. All coccoliths have spines but CFCs typically have longer spines and larger calices.

This taxon: Central areas with axial cross
Process 2-4 µm high with small calyx of 4 radially diverging blades.

Size:
Cell spherical, ca. 7 µm in diameter. Coccoliths, 1.5-2 µm long;
