Taxonomy:

Citation: Papposphaera sp. type 2 Cros & Fortuño, 2002
taxonomic rank: type
Taxonomic discussion: This species is more dimorphic than most Papposphaera species since the calcies of the CFCs with horizontal rods are isnctives and differ from the flaring calices of the BCs. However, although the difference in calyx form is visually striking, there is no significant difference in structure. This species is something of an outlier within the Alboran group but is probably not sufficiently different to merit a separate group. [my interpretation - JRY 2022]

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Papposphaera): Coccolith distal rim serrated - elements pentagonal;
Coccosphere varimorphic, or dimorphic. All coccoliths have spines but CFCs typically have longer spines and larger calices.

This taxon: Central area with diagonal cross
Process ca. 0.5-1.5 µm, robust with calyx of three or four rods.
Dimorphic: CFCs with tall processes (ca. 1.5 µm) with calyx of 4 (or 3?) rods perpendicular to process. BCs with shorter processes and calyx of 3 diverging rods.
