Picarola margalefii

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Coccolith families inc sed -> Papposphaeraceae -> Picarola -> Picarola margalefii
Sister taxa: P. margalefii, P. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Picarola margalefii Cros & Estrada, 2004
taxonomic rank: Species
Taxonomic discussion: The placement of Picarola within the Papposphaeraceae is strongly supported by the association of it with holococcoliths very similar to those of Papposphaera.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Picarola): Coccospheres varimorphic. All liths with curved quadrate process, but CFCs with larger processes.
This taxon: See generic diagnosis (genus is monospecific)

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: P. margalefii *

Morphology:

Coccosphere trimorphic, all coccoliths are elliptical muroliths, ca. 1 µm long, with narrow flat topped rim, axial cross and prominent process.
CFCs numerous; large gently-curved, rectangular-section, process 2-3.5 µm long.
BCs numerous; smaller banana-shaped process, 1-2 µm long.
AACs one or two only; rim flaring; moderate sized, nearly straight process, ca. 2 µm long.

Biology & life-cycles

One combination coccopshere with holococcoliths resembling those of Papposphaera polybotrys HOL was observed by Keuter et al. 2021
