Polycrater sp. ladle-like

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Coccolith families inc sed -> Alisphaeraceae -> Polycrater phase -> Polycrater sp. ladle-like
Sister taxa: A. unicornis POL, A. gaudii POL, C. valliformis POL, P. sp. with lip-like borders, P. sp. minimum, P. sp. with slit, P. sp. ladle-like, P. sp. two petals modified two absent, P. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Polycrater sp. ladle-like Cros & Fortuño, 2002
taxonomic rank: Species
Synonyms:

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Polycrater phase): Phase with quadrate, cup-like nannoliths
This taxon: Distal cup incomplete, two petals normal, the other two reduced to a rod-like structure

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages:

Morphology:

Form with one half of cone reduced to a spine, the other half broad, so coccolith has ladle-like appearance. Feet elaborately fluted. The specimens illustrated by Cros & Fortuño (2002) have longer spines and narrower bowl than those figured in Young et al. (2003) but are otherwise similar.

"The coccosphere has an unusual spiny shape. The coccoliths have the sepal-like structure similar to the other Polycrater species, whilst the petal-like structure is highly modified: two petal-like elements are very reduced with the corner highly extended forming a tall rod; the other two petal-like elements are normally constructed, the entire structure thus resembling a ladle." [Cros & Fortuno 2002]

Size:
Coccosphere diameter ca. 4.5 μm; coccolith width 0.4-0.5 μm, height of the spiny part 0.5-0.6 μm. [Cros & Fortuno 2002]
