Scyphosphaera campanula

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Zygodiscales -> Pontosphaeraceae -> Scyphosphaera -> Scyphosphaera campanula
Sister taxa: S. apsteinii, S. porosa ⟩⟨ S. brevis, S. globulata, S. hamptonii, S. hemirana, S. lagena ⟩⟨ S. campanula, S. intermedia, S. pulcherrima, S. tubifera, S. ventriosa ⟩⟨ S. columella, S. expansa, S. interstincta, S. olla, S. tercisensis, S. tubicena, S. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Scyphosphaera campanula Deflandre 1942
taxonomic rank: Species
Basionym: Scyphosphaera cylindrica Kamptner, 1955
Synonyms: Scyphosphaera cylindrica Kamptner, 1955 sensu Young 1998
Variants:
Taxonomic discussion: Young (1998) termed this taxon S. cylindrica but the name S. campanula Deflandre 1942 has priority and most forms show a flaring collar and so  are closer to the holotype of Deflandre. [JRy 2016]
S. cylindrica has been used in the Palaeogene, but mostly for specimens markedly taller than in the original description so an alternative identification such as S. columella might be more appropriate

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Scyphosphaera): Coccospheres with Pontosphaera-like body coccoliths and equatorial coccoliths with rims elevated into vase-like structures (lopadoliths).
This taxon: Squat, parallel sided, wide opening, almost square in profile, usually with weak flaring collar
