Syracosphaera pemmadiscus

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Syracosphaerales -> Syracosphaeraceae -> Syracosphaera -> SY molischii gp -> borealis type -> Syracosphaera pemmadiscus
Sister taxa: S. borealis, S. strigilis, S. pemmadiscus, S. andruleitii

Taxonomy:

Citation: Syracosphaera pemmadiscus Chang, 2013
taxonomic rank: Species
Taxonomic discussion: Described in - Chang, F.H., 2013. Syracosphaera pemmadiscus sp. nov. (Prymnesiophyceae), an extant coccolithophore from the southwest Pacific Ocean near New Zealand. Phycologia, 52(6): 618-624.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (borealis type): XCs elliptical discs, with a narrow rim, central part without conical depression. CFCs not differentiated.
This taxon: BCs with narrow, fluted, distal flange; XCs smooth elliptical discs with parenthesis shaped openings

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: S. pemmadiscus *

Morphology:

Inclusion of this species in the borealis type follows Chang (2013) and is based on the similarity of the exothecal planoliths to those of S. borealis and S. hirsuta, and absence of specialised circum flagellar cocoliths (CFCs).
Chang (2013) describes the coccosphere as having two types of exothecal coccoliths - curved planoliths as seen at top right of the holotype coccosphere and muroliths as seen at bottom left. The putative exothecal murolith may, however, be a damaged body coccolith.

Size:
Coccospheres 7-8µm; BCs 1.4-1.8 µm long
