Syracosphaera strigilis

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Syracosphaerales -> Syracosphaeraceae -> Syracosphaera -> SY molischii gp -> borealis type -> Syracosphaera strigilis
Sister taxa: S. borealis, S. strigilis, S. pemmadiscus, S. andruleitii

Taxonomy:

Citation: Syracosphaera strigilis (Gaarder 1962) Supraha et al. 2018
Taxonomic rank: species
Basionym: Corisphaera strigilis Gaarder, 1962,
Synonyms:
Taxonomic discussion: The name of this taxon has been changed from S. hirsuta to S. strigilis following documentation of combination coccospheres by Supraha et al. (2018).

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (borealis type): XCs elliptical discs, with a narrow rim, central part without conical depression. CFCs not differentiated.
This taxon: BCs with smooth rim - no real axial structure but irregular ring of isolated node; XCs smooth eliptical discs, with arcuate slits, rare

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: S. hirsuta *

Morphology:

Like S. borealis except for central area structures - irregular ring of nodes about half way between the rim and axis. Also XCs have prominent arcuate openings at both ends of central area, similar to those in molischii-type XCs.

Ecology & Biogeography

Temperate water and Mediterranean species

Biology & life-cycles
Supraha et al. (2015, 2018) documented a life-cycle association, from multiple observations of combination coccospheres,  between a holoccolithophore previously known as Corisphaera strigilis Gaarder 1962 and a heterococcolithophore formerly known as Syracosphaera strigilis Kleijne & Cros 2009
