Umbilicosphaera detecta

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Coccolithales -> Calcidiscaceae -> Umbilicosphaera -> Umbilicosphaera detecta
Sister taxa: U. anulus, U. foliosa, U. hulburtiana, U. sibogae ⟩⟨ U. jafari, U. rotula ⟩⟨ U. bramlettei, U. jordanii, U. protoannulus ⟩⟨ U. detecta, U. edgariae, U. henrikseniae, U. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Umbilicosphaera detecta (de Kaenel & Villa, 1996) Young & Bown 2014
taxonomic rank: Species
Basionym: Ericsonia detecta de Kaenel & Villa, 1996
Synonyms:
Variants: De Kaenel & Mojon (2023) separate C. ellipticus from U. detecta on the grounds that the distal shield elements are visible in phase contrast in C. ellipticus but not in U. detecta. They document the two forms as overlapping in range but state that the LAD of U. detecta, within NP21, is of stratigraphic value.
Taxonomic discussion: Similar to Umbilicosphaera protoannulus but strongly elliptical, and to Umbilicosphaera edgariae Bown & Dunkley Jones, 2012, but with narrower shields. Transferred to Umbilicosphaera by Young & Bown (2014) since it has a wide central area (central area width >25% of distal shield width).

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Umbilicosphaera): Central area open
This taxon: Medium to large (~5-9 microns), elliptical placolith coccoliths with narrow bicyclic rim (in XPL) and wide, apparently vacant, central area. The rim width is around half that of the central area (rim width/central area width: 0.5-0.7).

Search data:
LITHS: placolith, elliptical, CA: vacant,
CSPH: equant, monomorphic, CROSS-POLARS: rim-bicyclic, V-prominent, R-prominent,
Lith size: 5->9µm;

Geological Range:
Notes: Bown & Newsam (2017) argue that there is a disjunct range betwen Oligo-Miocene forms (U. detecta) and Middle Eocene forms (U. elliptica). Shamrock & Watkins (2012), however, reported occurrences throughout the Eocne (NP14 to NP21).
Last occurrence (top): within Miocene Epoch (5.33-23.03Ma, top in Messinian stage). Data source: de Kaenel & Villa, 1996
First occurrence (base): within NP14b subzone (46.29-47.84Ma, base in Lutetian stage). Data source: Shamrock & Watkins (2012)
