Umbilicosphaera rotula

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Coccolithales -> Calcidiscaceae -> Umbilicosphaera -> Umbilicosphaera rotula
Sister taxa: U. anulus, U. foliosa, U. hulburtiana, U. sibogae ⟩⟨ U. jafari, U. rotula ⟩⟨ U. bramlettei, U. jordanii, U. protoannulus ⟩⟨ U. detecta, U. edgariae, U. henrikseniae, U. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Umbilicosphaera rotula (Kamptner, 1956) Varol, 1982
taxonomic rank: Species
Basionym: Tremalithus rotula Kamptner, 1956
Synonyms: NB Craspedolithus declivus is probably a synonym of Ceratolithus cristatus HET coccolithomorpha type, but the name has been applied to U. rotula specimens.
Taxonomic discussion: Was often placed in Geminilithella. The name Tremalithus rotula was invalidly described but the alternative combination Cycloplacolithus rotulus was validated by Kamptner 1956.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Umbilicosphaera): Central area open
This taxon: Coccoliths with wide central-area and narrow rim. Shields of similar size

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: T. rotula * , C. aequiscutum * , C. cricotus * , U. lordi *

Morphology:

Umbilocosphaera coccoliths with wide central-area and narrow rim. Shields of similar size. The distal shield is slightly domed and is formed of shallowly imbricated elements, giving a complex suture pattern. The proximal shield consists of a single cycle of non-imbricated elements with nearly radial sutures, it is nearly flat except for a collar on its lower surface. A well developed tube separates the shields.

Geological Range:
Notes: The species is common or abundant through most of the Neoegene before becoming extinct in the Late Pliocene. Okada (2000) discussed the last occurrence (using the name Umbilicosphaera aequiscutum) and suggested it could be a useful marker within zone CN12d (NN18).
Last occurrence (top): within NN18 zone (1.93-2.39Ma, top in Gelasian stage). Data source: Okada 2000
First occurrence (base): within NN2 zone (19.00-22.82Ma, base in Aquitanian stage). Data source: Young 1998
