Scyphosphaera hemirana

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Zygodiscales -> Pontosphaeraceae -> Scyphosphaera -> Scyphosphaera hemirana
Sister taxa: S. apsteinii, S. porosa ⟩⟨ S. brevis, S. globulata, S. hamptonii, S. hemirana, S. lagena ⟩⟨ S. campanula, S. intermedia, S. pulcherrima, S. tubifera, S. ventriosa ⟩⟨ S. columella, S. expansa, S. interstincta, S. olla, S. tercisensis, S. tubicena, S. sp.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Scyphosphaera hemirana Kamptner 1967
taxonomic rank: Species
Synonyms: Both these species weredescribed from the same material as S. hemirana and the holotypes appear very similar. S. hemirana has page pririoty and is based on the clearest holotype. [JRY 2016]

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Scyphosphaera): Coccospheres with Pontosphaera-like body coccoliths and equatorial coccoliths with rims elevated into vase-like structures (lopadoliths).
This taxon: Cylindrical Scyphosphaera with fluted sides

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: S. hemirana * , S. oremesa * , S. tora *

Morphology:

The illustrations appear distinctive but the species has never been described properly and posibly is based on debris from another calcareous microfossil

Search data:
LITHS: murolith, cylindrical, elliptical, hollow, CA: plate, pores, CROSS-POLARS: V-prominent, R-prominent, rim-bicyclic,

Geological Range:
Notes: The type material is a dredged holocene ooze (Challenger station 338), but it inlcudes reowrked specimens
Last occurrence (top): within Late Pleistocene Sub-Epoch (0.01-0.13Ma, top in Tarantian stage). Data source: Kamptner 1967
First occurrence (base): within Pleistocene Epoch (0.01-2.59Ma, base in Gelasian stage). Data source: Kamptner 1967
