Taxonomy:
Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Solisphaera): Coccoliths without radial lath cycle; coccosphere dome-shaped, polymorphic
This taxon: CCs very small, with trapezoidal protrusions, flat or slightly curved; possible BCs flat (Palaeocene)
Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: S. palmula *
Morphology:
Two simple coccoliths, with very narrow rim, central plate and no process, are associated with a group of specimens that may be a collapsed coccosphere; these may represent polymorphic coccoliths similar to those seen in extant species of Solisphaera.
Differentiation: See the discussion of comparisons with extant species for S. tegula. Solisphaera palmula is smaller, narrower and more elongate than S. tegula. [Bown 2016]
