Taxonomy:

Citation: Pappomonas vexillata Keuter et al. 2021
taxonomic rank: species
Taxonomic discussion: Described in Pappomonas but possibly should be in Papposphaera.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Papposphaera): Coccolith distal rim serrated - elements pentagonal;
Coccosphere varimorphic, or dimorphic. All coccoliths have spines but CFCs typically have longer spines and larger calices.

This taxon: Central area with axial cross supporting spine with oblique triangular calyx.
Varimorphic - spines higher and porcesses larger at flagellar pole

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Pappomonas vexillata

Morphology:

Diagnosis A papposphaeracean species with a dimorphic coccosphere. All coccoliths bear leaf-like appendages. The flattened calyxes consisting of two dissimilar elements are held in a tilted position with reference to the central process. The appendages of the CFCs are higher and bear two blade-like elements, while those of the BC are smaller and bear triangular and rod-shaped elements.

Coccoliths: Round to weakly elliptical and 0.8−1.0 × 1.0−1.2μm in size. Rim of typical Papposphaeracea type,with serrated uper margin. Central area spanned by axial cross supporting process with calyx formed of a triangular plate. Coccosphere: varimorphic - process height and calyx size increases toward the flagellar pole.

Ecology & Biogeography

The species was routinely observed during a 2-year survey of the Gulf of Aqaba (Keuter et al. 2021)
