Taxonomy:

Citation: Chrysochromulina Lackey 1939 emend Edvardsen et al. 2011
Rank: Genus
Type species: Chrysochromulina parva Lackey, 1939
Taxonomic discussion: Numerous species have been described in Chrysochromulina. Edvardsen et al. (2011) showed that several of these should be removed into a separate genus Haptolina, within the Prymnesiacea. The remaining species are divided here into three groups:
  1. definite Chrysochromulina - species shown by molecular genetics to belong in the clade containing the type species of the genus. These species typically have saddle-shaped cells
  2. likely Pryms - species for which there is currently no molecular genetic data but which appear morphologically likely to be members of the Prymnesiaceae.
  3. Affinity not established - other species for which there is currently no molecular genetic data
In addition, note that the form described as Chrysochromulina parkeae is now known to be a phase in the life-cycle of Braarudosphaera bigelowii and so is described separately - Braarudosphaera bigelowii ALT
