Original description: Cells predominantly saddle-shaped, with two smooth, equal, homodynamic flagella. Haptonema long to very long and coiling. Flagella and haptonema inserted ventrally and subapically. Cells covered by small organic scales with patterns of radiating and concentric ribs or fibrils. Flagellar apparatus with a simple R1 flagellar root that predominantly contains few microtubules (<10) and lacks a bundle of microtubules. Cells with two yellow-brown chloroplasts each with an immersed pyrenoid. Nucleotide sequences for the SSU and LSU rDNA distinct.
