Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Coccolith families inc sed -> Alisphaeraceae -> Canistrolithus
Sister taxa: Alisphaera, Canistrolithus, Polycrater phase

Daughter taxa (time control age-window is: 0-800Ma)

Taxonomy:

Citation: Canistrolithus Jordan & Chamberlain, 1993
taxonomic rank: Genus
Type species: Canistrolithus valliformis Jordan & Chamberlain, 1993

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Alisphaeraceae): Heterococcoliths asymetric, arranged in meridional rows on coccosphere; V-unit forms flange, R-unit basal. Also nannolith phase "Polycrater" with quadrate aragonitic liths.
This taxon: Coccoliths elongate oblong muroliths with asymmetric distal flange

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Canistrolithus *

Morphology:

Monothecate, coccoliths are elongate, oblong, muroliths with an asymmetric distal flange. Outer tube wall elements show weakly anticlockwise imbrication; inner tube wall elements vertical. In comparison to Alisphaera, there is no proximal flange or grill and the tube is higher, but basic structure appears similar (Kleijne et al. 2002).

Search data:
LITHS: murolith, asymmetric, elliptical, CA: vacant,
CSPH: elongated, monomorphic, CROSS-POLARS: V-prominent, R-prominent,
Lith size: 2.2->3.5µm; Coccosphere size: 15->25µm;
