Taxonomic discussion: This combination is usually cited as Coccolithus eopelagicus (Bramlette & Riedel, 1954) Bramelette & Sullivan 1961. However as noted in the comments (see below) the combnaiotn was not validly introduced in Brameltte & Sullivan 1961. It was, however, validly used by Hay et al 1966.     

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (C. pelagicus group): Elliptical to sub-circular with central opening-sometimes with bar or delicate cross
This taxon: Like C. pelagicus but very large (>14 µm).

I think the combination to Coccolithus eopelagicus in Bramlette and Sullivan (1961) is not valid. The only mention of C. eopelagicus in the paper is when they are describing the new sp. Coccolithus staurion (page 141). Some paragraphs above they state that Tremalithus is a paragenus, and unnecesary, but they don´t make a proper emendation for the genus Coccolithus anyway.

Hi Juan Pablo - I think you right here. The prime source for combinations are the Loeblich & Tappan indices and their continuation in the INA Newsletter. However, here I think they are ni error. Loeblich & Tappan 1966 indicate that the combination Coccolithus eopelagicus (Bramlette & Riedel, 1954) Bramlette & Sullivan, 1961 is valid, but they cite it as being established on page 141 which as you say simply includes a passing reference to the name. New combinations proposed after 1953 require full and direct citation of the basionym (ICBN Art 33 paragraph4; now ICN Art 41.5). No citation of the basioym is given by Bramlette & Sullivan 1961. It looks like Loeblich & Tappan made a (rare) mistake here, since they do mark other combinations as invalid under ICBN At 33 para 4. Given this the authorship for the combination is probably either Levin 1965 or Hay et al 1966. (NB All references cited are in the nannotax reference list).
