Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Farinacci & Howe Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was originally compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989, since 2000 it has been updated and extended by Richard Howe - see The Farinacci and Howe Catalog - an Introduction.

Original Description

With the characters of the Order. [Motile or palmelloid unicellular organisms; if non-motile, producing motile swarmers. Motile cells with two unequal, often anisokont, heterodynamic flagella and a haptonema; the shorter flagellum sometimes reduced to a vestigial structure.] Cells compressed or not compressed; flagella and haptonema inserted ventrally or laterally, the anterior flagellum bearing a garniture of fine hairs alone or fine hairs with small dense bodies; the posterior flagellum often bearing fine hairs but never with dense bodies; the haptonema demonstrating in the free part progressive distal reduction in the number of microtubules from approximately 8 at the base. Stigma present or absent. A pit or canal present penetrating the cell in front of the anterior flagellum, sometimes associated with the stigma, if present. Storage metabolite in the form of refractive bodies, known to be paramylon in some species.

Extra details from original publication
The family includes the following genera and species:
CORCONTOCHRYSIS Kalina, 1970. C. noctivaga Kalina (Kalina, 1970, 1975)
DIACRONEMA Prauser, 1958. D. vlkianum Prauser (Prauser, 1958; Fournier, 1969)
EXANTHEMACHRYSIS Lepailleur, 1970. E. gayraliae Lepailleur (Lepailleur, 1970).
PAVLOVA Butcher, 1952. P. calceolata Van der Veer (Van der Veer, 1976) P.granifera (Mack) Green (Mack, 1954; Green, 1973) P. gyrans Butcher (type species; Butcher, 1952; Green & Manton, 1970) P. helicata Van der Veer (Van der Veer, 1972) P. lutheri (Droop) Green (Droop, 1953; Green, 1975) P. pinguis Green (Green, 1967) P. salina (N. Carter) comb.nov. (Carter, 1937; Van der Veer, 1969; present communication) P. virescens Billard (Billard, 1976)

From the illustration it appears that Beckingia salina Ruinen (Ruinen, 1938) is probably also a member of the family. However, the description of the species is rather brief and only a single appendage is reported so that it is impossible to draw any firm conclusions until the organism can be re-investigated.
