Rank: genus
Basionym: Histiastrum
Taxonomic discussion: Has been assigned to Pyloniidae, here assigned to Larnacillidae following new classification being developed by Suzuki & co-workers

Catalog entries: Histiastrum

Original description: Testae enucleatae e cellulis binis (longitudinaliter constrictae) aut e cellulis appositis multis coalitae (Effusae planae aut teretes et subglobosae).

Testarum cellulae concentricae aut spirales, tenues plurimae, passim ordine nullo spongiosae. Testae radiatae in stellae formam abeuntes (spongiosae). Radiis liberis spongiosis, membrana cellulosa, basi coniunctis.

Translated description: Test enucleate, with two chambers( longitudinally constricted), or formed of many chambers grown together (spread in a plane or rounded and subglobose). Chambers of test concentric or spiral, mostly delicate, spongy and irregular. Test radiate, in a stellate form (spongy). Radii free, spongy, joined at the base by a cellular membrane. (Translated from Latin by E.M.R. and W.R.R.)]
Remarks on original description: [Haeckel [1887a, p.544] and Campbell [1954, p.D87] both designate Histiastrum quaternarium Ehrenberg, 1873a as the type species of Histiastrum. However, this seems inappropriate, as this species was not among those first subsequently assigned to this genus. Species first subsequently assigned are Histiastrum fasciatum Haeckel, 1860a; H. trinacrium Haeckel, 1860a; H. ypsiloides Haeckel, 1860a.]
