Citation: Aliculosphaera subantarctica (Edwards & Perch-Nielsen 1975) Aubry & Bord 2009
Rank: Species
Basionym: Helicopontosphaera subantarctica Edwards & Perch-Nielsen 1975
Taxonomic discussion: The general morphology resembles Alisphaera but the strongly birefringent distal shield (see LMs) suggests this is an R-unit whereas it is a V-unit in Alisphaera. Edwards & Perch-Nielsen (1975) and Aubry & Bord (2009) both suggested affinity with the Zygodiscales - however this would again suggest that the flange would be formed of V-units.  An alternative possiblity is that this is an asymmetric reticulofenestrid.

Distinguishing features: large species with prominent wing
