Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Biscutaceae): Regular placoliths; rim broad, central area relatively narrow, with variable central structures.
The distal shield is formed from V-units and the proximal shield and tube cycle are formed from R-units.
This taxon: Asymmetric base, with large, hollow, flaring spines, closed distally by a domed covering

Daughter taxa (time control age-window is: 0-800Ma)
				Boletuvelum candens Biscutum-like coccoliths with large, hollow, flaring spines, closed distally by a domed covering.
				Palaeopontosphaera patula sensu Lambert 1993 Biscutum-like species with spines varying from low and simple, to tall hollow and distally covered
				Boletuvelum sp. Specimens not identified to species level
