Taxonomy:
Usually recorded as Anoplosolenia brasiliensis in older literature, see discussion of genus.
Distinguishing features: Coccosphere without spines, coccoliths >5µm long
Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: C. brasiliensis [no catalog entry yet], C. grani * , C. grani closterium * , C. grani cylindrothecaeformis * , C. tenuis * , S. ganoretus * , S. malenus *
Morphology: Coccosphere varimorphic, slender; ends tapered with many very elongate liths, but no spines. Liths have very regular bars, which offset neatly to form median ridge. Inner cycle of R-units is better developed in the terminal coccoliths so these show stronger birefringence.
For identification note that the liths usually are significantly larger than E. huxleyi coccoliths and have separated laths.
Size: Liths typically larger than those of C. murrayi and C. corsellii, 5-7 µm long (NB Malinverno gives size range of body coccoliths as 5.8-7µm but specimens with coccoliths of 5-5.5µm are common, Young unpubl. obs.)
